The First Religious Act in History?

I was in attendance (online) for a conversation between Eric Metaxas and Dr. John Lennox. Frankly, I would be happy to hear Dr. Lennox read the phonebook (if any of you remember what that is!), but the conversation was eminently more interesting.

During their dialogue, it was suggested that the very first religious act is recorded in Genesis 3:7 as we read the actions of Adam and Eve – “Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.”

How, you may ask, is this a religious act? Simply, their innocence was violated as they rebelled from God’s gracious words, words designed to allow their continued existence in Eden. But, as is often the case with Satan’s lies, there was indeed some truth in his statement. As Charles Spurgeon has suggested “Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong; it is knowing the difference between right and almost right. Adam and Eve DID become like God, knowing good and evil (Gen. 3:5), because now they were PRACTIONERS OF EVIL! Their immediate response was to take action to cover their transgressions…with foilage!

Apart from Christianity, all religions (and I use this word advisedly) tell mankind what they must do to be accepted by God, while the Christian faith says what needs to be done HAS BEEN DONE in Christ!

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— … so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 5:12, 21).

    Good stuff!

  2. Peterson, Walter says:

My thought on this passage, is that Man was created in Gods image, Woman taken from Man was made also in the image of God. Both Adam & Eve were very intelligent and were covered in Gods glory. (clothed in Gods glory) when Satan deceived Eve she fell, she doubted God and took the lie, but Adam chose to follow Eve and they were both under the curse. At that very moment Gods glory was removed. The start of the sin nature engulfed mankind, Adam and Eve were now naked, they both hid from God and made an insufficient covering to cover their shame caused by their sin. God responded by making clothes for them with animal skins a sufficient sacrifice, without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sin. Thus, reflecting Gods plan that Jesus was to be the Lamb of God and give Himself & His sinless blood up to redeem sinners.

Thanks for your, In His Grip. Walter
