“A Basket of Deplorables”

A phrase recently uttered by a political candidate that was immediately taken as an basketoffense by a large number of individuals. Interestingly, however, from a Biblical viewpoint it was spot on!

For example, take the witness of Psa. 53:1: “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that does good.”

But, you remonstrate, that’s not speaking of me, is it?! Here’s your answer, from Romans 3:10-18: …as it is written: “There is none righteous, no not one; there is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God. They are all gone out of the way, they have together become unprofitable, there is none that does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open grave, with their tongues they have used deceit, the poison of asps is under their lips; whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their way, and the way of peace they did not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

Wow! So, apart from the saving work of Christ, we are ALL in this basket! Here’s one more statement from the original quote: “Now some of those folks — they are irredeemable…”.

Happily, as accurate as the first phrase was, Scripture clearly obliterates the second! Here are just two examples:

Christ redeemed* us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone having been hanged on a tree”). Gal. 3:13

*Redeem – ἐξαγοράζω exagorazō – “by payment of a price to recover from the power of another”

For He has made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Cor. 5:21

Thanks be to God that He provides a way out of that “basket!”
