Are YOU “Undone?!”

train-filled-the-templeThe prophet Isaiah describes a powerful vision in chapter six of his book:

In the year that King Uzziah died I then saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphs; each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another, and said, “Holy, holy, holy, is Jehovah of Hosts; the whole earth full of His glory.” And the doorposts moved at the voice of the one who cried, and the house was filled with smoke. – Isa 6:1-4

What an extraordinary sight! Notice that the train of His robe (a sign of His inimitable majesty) was so extensive that it enveloped the entire temple! Also, even the seraphim covered their eyes, unable to view His glory, called out – “Holy, holy, holy.” This is the ONLY one of God’s attributes that is treated this way in Scripture (Rev. 4:8, where this pronouncement is continuously uttered, day and night). Not His Love, nor His Mercy, not His Grace, not even His Sovereignty…but His HOLINESS!

Isaiah’s response was immediate:

Then I said, “Woe is me! For I am undone; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of Hosts.” – Isa. 6:5 The Hebrew word for “undone” is used 15 times in the Old Testament, translated “to be dumb or silent, fail, perish.” Personally, I like the KJV – UNDONE!

Isaiah knew that no one could behold God in His unveiled majesty and live (Ex. 33:20).

What does this teach us? Simply this: Isaiah only understood who he was when he understood who God is!

How about YOU? Are you “undone” before the God of the universe? Amazingly, He still sent His son to pay the price for us, the “undone” ones!

The apostle Paul repeats this precious truth in Rom. 7:24,25: “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
