One Cross, but Three Options….

From 1 Corinthians 1:23-24, we read that the preaching of the Cross is to the Jews a stumbling block (skandalos in the Greek, as Christ failed to defeat the Romans and usher in their kingdom) and to the Greeks foolishness (moria, or moronic in the Greek, a dying Leader does not make sense). However, to those who are being saved this same Cross has this extraordinary result: the stumbling block becomes powerful (dunamis or dynamic) the foolishness becomes wisdom (sophia). Because, according to Paul in verse 25, “the foolishness of God is wiser than men and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

Leave out the cross, and you have killed the religion of Jesus. Atonement by the
blood of Jesus is not an arm of Christian truth; it is the heart of it. -Charles Spurgeon
