These two verses from the life of Joseph provide extraordinary insights:
God is totally sovereign
When Joseph’s siblings showed concern for his potential vengeance on them, his response was “Fear not. Am I in the place of God?” As the 2nd most powerful individual in what was likely the greatest civilization of his time, Joseph knew that his vaunted position meant nothing in the face of God’s sovereign power.
Man is totally depraved.
None of us are as bad as we could be, but we are all “bad to the bone.” Joseph spoke to this when he said, “But as for you, you thought evil against me.” He understood the evil motivation that was behind the actions of his brothers, a potential that exists for all mankind.
God’s Providence is totally good.
Even in the face of the obviously evil intent and actions of his brothers, Joseph accurately noted that “God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.” The most powerful point of this statement is that God didn’t “fix” something they did out of their evil hearts, He “intended” it to take place for ultimate good! Sounds a lot like Romans 8:28, doesn’t it?!
